Friday, March 7 · 4:30 – 7pm at Upper Stannary, Daphne du Maurier Building, University of Exeter, Penryn Campus, Treliever Road Penryn TR10 9FE
The aim of this event is to bring the traditional, yet evolving story of St Piran and Cornish storytelling to life, through an interactive workshop followed by live music and dance, food and refreshments.
16:30 Welcome and introduction from the University of Exeter, Institute of Cornish Studies Co-Directors Dr Garry Tregidga and Dr Joanie Wilett
16:40 Workshop. Graduate students Grace and Jowan will facilitate a discussion on the importance of storytelling in Cornish culture and its significance to Cornwall today. They will break down the story of St Piran and ask ‘How can St Piran’s tale be adapted to contemporary Cornwall?’. Audience participation will be encouraged as the group shares it’s connection to one of the most important days in the Cornish calendar, Gool Peran. This will culminate in a co-produced story of St Piran which will be retold by Grace for all to enjoy.
17:30 Food and drinks served and an open marketplace to explore. Enjoy a break to share a pasty and sweet treats – the Upper Stannary bar will also be open. Stalls will host several different community organisations who are focused on Cornish heritage and culture for you to peruse.
18:00 Live music and dancing led by TANEK dance band. Come together and dance to a plethora of Cornish tunes. Don’t worry if you haven’t danced at a Nos Lowen before, Cornish dances are led and easy to follow by watching everyone’s feet and just following the beat! The most important thing is joining in and having fun.
19:00 Event Close
We look forward to everyone coming together and celebrating the culture of Kernow!
