60th DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY COURSE, REUNION, EXHIBITION and OPEN DAY.

The 80 young musicians of the Cornwall Youth Brass Band will be spending four days over the Easter weekend rehearsing and studying under the baton of their Guest Conductor Philip Harper, Musical Director of the famous Cory Band, graded the No. 1 Brass Band in the world.

Aged between 10 and 21 all the musicians also play with a local brass band and devote many extra hours to their membership of the Cornwall Youth Brass Band, rehearsing monthly with their team of local Conductors and Tutors in preparation for the twice yearly residential Courses, held at Truro High School for Girls.

The Band was founded in 1955 and to mark their 60th Anniversary have commissioned a major new piece of music, The Mermaid of Zennor, from their Guest Conductor, Philip Harper, a noted composer of music for brass bands. Philip also composed and conducted Beyond the Tamar on the occasion of the Band’s 50th Anniversary. In addition they will play a new piece, Illusions, by one of their musicians, 17 year old Daniel Hall, making two world Premiere’s to be performed in their Gala Concert at the end of the Course on Monday 6th April at St Michael’s Church in Newquay.

To mark the 60th Anniversary the Band are holding a Reunion evening at the School on Saturday 4th April, when all former members and friends of the Band are invited to meet up and play in the Rehearsal with the present Band, as well as enjoying an Exhibition of memorabilia drawn for the Cornwall Youth Brass Band’s extensive archive of programmes, photographs and letters.

The Band will also be repeating its successful Open Rehearsal and Audition afternoon on Saturday 4th April. This gives young musicians interested in joining the Band an opportunity to observe the Band in action and talk to the local Team of Conductors and Tutors about the simple procedure required to join the Band.
