Redruth Town Mayor opens new shop

On Saturday 1st August at 11am, a crowd gathered outside 65 West End, Redruth for the opening of a new shop in the town centre. Redruth Town Mayor, Will Tremayne, was there to cut the National Tartan ribbon across the entrance, announcing ‘Ygerys yw!’, (‘It’s open!’) in his best Cornish, staying to share cake and splits with staff and visitors.

Among the more than forty visitors were three former Grand Bards (Ann Jenkin, Mick Paynter and Rod Lyon) and several other bards: Steve Gainey, Vanessa Moyle, David Trethewey, Gareth and Pat Parry, Steve Harris, Loveday Jenkin, Shelagh Garrard, Margaret Lyon, Rael and Peter Harvey......

‘Kowsva, The Cornish Place’ is a shop with a difference. It’s not only a drop-in centre for people interested in Cornish language and culture, but also a meeting-place for volunteers of the popular Heritage Lottery funded Taves an Tir (Tongue of the Land) place and family names project. Of course, there are Cornish language and bilingual books and DVDs for sale, as well as some fun Cornwall-themed gifts.  Kowsva will also offer regular free events and workshops throughout the summer and autumn, so keep an eye on the shop window or http://cornish-language.org for forthcoming Cornish language taster sessions and informal talks about the language heritage we see and hear all around us.

Taves an Tir project officer Rob Simmons said, ‘The Redruth part of the project is our final and most exciting phase.  We’re just getting under way here in Redruth and hope to see lots of people come through the door to chat about and explore Cornwall and Cornish heritage with us. So don’t be shy, just drop by!’

The shop will be open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 10am and 1pm, and on Saturday 15 August at 1pm there will be an informal and fun one hour class where you can learn some simple greetings and phrases in Cornish.  Why not call in and say ‘dydh da’?
