Grand opening of Kowethas an Yeth's new shop Kowsva/The Cornish place at 65 West End, next door to the estate agent Bill Bannister. 10 - 2. The place names project Taves an Tir will be based here and you will be able to buy books and other things. The Gorsedh Kernow 'Do Something for Cornwall' Challenge 2015 The Redruth phase of the Taves an Tir place names, personal names and local history project is starting! Details here. The first event is a walk around the Churchtown Trail with Rob Simmons, Project Leader, on Sunday 28th. July. Everyone is very welcome at any or all of the first four events. There will be a training day for project volunteers at the County Records Office in Truro on September 19th. For Bards: September Gorsedh booking form Awen Ceremony / Solempnita Awen – Carwynnen Quoit, Treslothan, near Camborne, TR14 9LR Sunday 21st June starting at 11am. Bards are invited to arrive from 10am for robing. Awen ceremonies are often held in unpopulated venues, so there are no toilet or changing facilities at this site, which is very rural. Carwynnen Quoit is usually only accessible to pedestrians but on this special occasion the adjacent field will be made available to bards for parking. This is the first time a Gorsedh Kernow ceremony has been held there for 67 years so the Sustrust Trustees will be delighted to welcome us back after such a long absence! Directions on foot - The nearest landmark and safe public parking for Carwynnen Quoit is Treslothan Church. Turn right along the footpath by Treslothan well, just up from the church, along the field and through Stennack woods, then right along a short stretch of lane to site entrance, (approx. 15 minutes). There is limited parking here. By car - TR14 9LR. Heading from Camborne to Praze-an Beeble on the B3303, turn left just before you reach Killivose Cemetery, signposted to Treslothan. Go past both entrances to Treslothan Church on your right. Take the next sharp right when you see a house in front of you. Follow the road until the woodland ends. The field is on the right side. Sustrust has produced a downloadable APP about local archaeology, available from www.thegiantoutdoors.org Book launch: You are invited to the launch of the book, Gorsedh Kernow returns to Carwynnen, Gorsedh Kernow a dhewhel dhe Gerwynnen, 1948-2015 from 12.30 onwards on Sunday 21st.June 2015 in Treslothan Church, by kind permission of the vicar of Crowan with Treslothan, Rev. Dom Whitting. This will be after the Awen ceremony for bards at Carwynnen earlier that day. The launch will be performed by the Grand Bard, Mrs Maureen Fuller Steren Mor, in the presence of bards, contributors, supporters and friends. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available. The Gorsedh bookstall will be open from 12.30- 2.30pm, and one for Sustrust, who have also published a book on Carwynnen, which will be available for sale. Poster As a further celebration of Awen we have arranged for an open afternoon at St Justin’s factory in Cuxhaven Way, Long Rock, Penzance, TR20 8HX on Friday 19th June from 1pm until 4.30pm. Tours of the factory, of about 20 minutes duration, are bookable in advance for this special afternoon only, by ringing St Justin on 01736 369600 and this stunning jewellery will be available to purchase from the Gorsedh Kernow marquee in the grounds of St Justin's factory. There is no charge for tours but donations to Gorsedh Kernow will be welcomed. This is a public event and will be featured in the Penzance Golowan festival programme. The Grand Bard and Grand Bard elect will both be there and you can enjoy afternoon tea and homemade cakes while browsing the stalls and displays. Free parking available. The facilities of St Austell football club will be available on the Saturday of the ceremony, including parking, toilets, food and drink. Visitors are welcome to bring folding chairs to place outside the bardic circle to watch the ceremony in comfort, or there will be seating available in the spectator stands of the football club. We would especially like to encourage families and friends of bards and the general public to attend the ceremony and some of the Esedhvos events held during the week before.
Sterts Theatre One-Act Playwriting Competition 2015 Now in its fourth year! As in previous years Sterts is looking for 30-minute plays for up to four adult actors. The winner will receive their £100 prize and have their play produced on December 5, 2015, in Sterts Studio. Two runners-up will also receive prizes and their plays will be given rehearsed readings. Last year we introduced an additional award for a play written in English on a Cornish theme. This extra prize is to encourage Cornish culture wherever it has taken root. And, thanks to the internet, the competition has gone global. In 2014 we had top quality entries from New Zealand, the USA, Shetland – and even London! You don’t have to live in Cornwall to enter. You do have to:- An experienced panel of judges selects the top plays. Then our Cornish celebrity judges Elaine Ruth White and Simon Parker choose the winners. Bardic ceremony: Saturday, May 23rd at Davies Square, Wallaroo, South Australia. Wallaroo was a Welsh smelting town and Welsh ceased to be used in religious ceremonies in 1904, but the community are still proud of their joint Celtic roots. Two Cornish Bards reside in this seaside town with a further two in Moonta. Grand Bard Maureen Fuller will be officiating at this ceremony, which commences at 2.30 pm.
