The Gorsedh Kernow Endowment Fund: Cornish Culture: an investment for the future

The Cornish are a National Minority; Kernewek is a protected minority language; mining heritage is celebrated; stones and wells, forts and rounds are protected …….
wrasslers – writers – rowers – rappers – theatre – dance – poetry – games – musicians – potters – puppeteers – mimers – painting – thinking – carving – filming – apprentices – administrators – marketers – technicians…….

The demand for Cornish culture in all its many aspects and forms is growing but much more needs to be done to secure its assets and explore its future.

Our culture needs people to develop it – to evolve, create and meet modern challenges and to live by its values and principles –  it’s not just a 'What's on' Diary, it‘s a way of life.

We need funds to develop skills, to study and to create the Cornish culture of the 21st century. The world demands quality and commitment, credibility and integrity - and       cultural workers need to pay the rent!

Public funding can be fickle and precarious. The Gorsedh Kernow Endowment Fund will provide support for Cornish cultural projects and development, provide match funding to lever-in other money and support.

The Fund is governed by the Council of Gorsedh Kernow. The bigger the fund, the more we can do, and the more influential a partner we become.

How can you help?   You could

  • give money to the GKEF – if you’ve got a spare million, or £10 a year, it all helps

  • make a bequest in your will

  • donate a percentage of profit from an enterprise

  • organise an event in aid of the GKEF

  • arrange to lend a sum, interest free, for an agreed period, with the interest adding to the GKEF

The interest earned by investing the GKEF  capital sum will be used to achieve the purposes of the Fund. How ever much or little you give will become part of the permanent Fund, and will work, year after year for Cornish culture (a loan will be returned by agreement).

Investment strategy will be set by the Council of Gorsedh Kernow, taking professional advice and considering the recommendations of the Treasurer. An annual report will be made to theGorsedh Kernow AGM.

The Gorsedh Kernow Endowment Fund aims to

  • produce a return to support projects, systems, initiatives and assets working in Cornish culture

  • raise standards, broaden skills, promote creativity, research and education, protect assets and intellectual property

  • work with others and encourage widespread and deep understanding of Cornish cultural values, principles and expressions

  • ensure decisions about investment in Cornish culture are made in an accountable manner

The Fund will produce investment returns that can support people, projects, events,  research, creativity, conservation, sport, art, folk-lore, feasts – and that all-important ‘back-office’ support.
