There have been a good number of entries for the Gorsedd Competitions this year - the 78th Anniversary of the founding of Gorseth Kernow. We received innumerable enquiries for brochures from the Gorsedd website www.gorsethkernow.org.uk, the result being a considerable increase in entries from abroad. Adult entries have increased this year and it has been very rewarding to see entries from Cornish Schools. Some have excelled themselves and supported the competitions wholeheartedly, particularly, Flushing Primary School which has won ‘The Legonna Prize’ for the highest number of quality entries. Pensilva, Cape Cornwall, St Johns Roman Catholic and Crowan Schools were all equally as enthusiastic with their entries.

Painting, Poetry and Short stories are always popular with the school entries. The Winners for the ‘English Verse’ Classes are as follows: Jess Burton and Hannah Williams, Cape Cornwall School (12-18yrs); Tommy Lumley, Flushing (10 –11yrs); Tegan Bolitho Harris, an individual entry from Bude (under 10yrs).

Katherine Nelhams won the ‘Detailed Study of a Cornish Subject’ (18yrs and under), with Jacob Stone, Cape Cornwall School gaining first for ‘A Short Story Set In Cornwall’ (12-18yrs) and Logan Payne, Flushing School, gained First Prize in the 11yrs and under class. Emma Winder won a First Prize with her picture of Pendennis Castle in the Children’s Photography class and Samantha Greagsby from Redruth School gained a first place in the 12 –18yrs painting class. Lianna Goss came first in the painting class for 11yrs and under.

The Cornish Language entries for Verse and Prose were of a high standard with the Supreme Award of the ‘Mordon-Carador Rosebowl’ going to Dr. Ken George (verse) and ‘The Cornish Crystal’ awarded to Tony Hak for the prose written in Cornish.

Elizabeth Trathen won the class ‘A Short Story For Beginners In Cornish’ and Mina Dresser is awarded First and ‘The Henry Jenner Cup’ for a ‘Cornish Essay in Cornish’ with Charles Lovell winning both the ‘ Cornish Essay’ written in English and the ‘Short Story Set In Cornwall’.

Cornish Dialect prose and verse was of a very high standard commentated the judge, who was impressed with the number of entries but is always delighted to receive more. Mary Quick won the Dialect Prose and Enid Mavor the Verse.

The poetry classes, again received a high number of entries, Maureen Jackett from Flushing won the ‘English Verse On A Cornish Subject’ class. Alan Kent gained first with ‘English Verse by a Cornish Poet’

‘Song in English about Cornwall’ gained first place for Mina Dresser and Mrs. M. J. Griffen has been awarded first place with an outstanding piece of calligraphy.

Gennie Peters of Flushing –a first time entrant- won the ‘Photography Single Print class’ and Tony Buscombe won the ‘Group Photo’ class with some sharp and well presented pictures.

Mrs. J. Nunn came first in the Painting In Watercolour class and Mrs. D.A. Pascoe gained first place with Painting in any other medium.

Next year’s Competition Brochures will be available from the beginning of September and all classes will close on March 31st 2007.

This year there will be an extended exhibition of all the Cornish Gorsedd winning entries in conjunction with the Esethvos Kernow at The Cornish Studies Centre, Alma Place, Redruth from Friday 25th August to Saturday 9th September.
