Holyer an Gof homepage

Below are some of the questions we are often asked about entering the Holyer an Gof Awards.

Q: What are the entry classes for this year?
A: Please see the guidelines for entry

Q: How many classes/sub-classes can I enter?
A: This year you may only enter a book in one class or sub-class. Please ask us for advice if you are not sure which class or sub-class to enter.

Q: How many copies of my publication do you want?
A: Two copies, please. This makes it far easier for us to ensure that the publication is reviewed by as many Readers as possible. Copies are usually not returnable. Books are donated to Kresen Kernow or to local libraries or sold in order to help finance the scheme. This is in lieu of an entry fee for the Awards. Please contact us (see below) if this is a problem.

Q: What is the closing date for entries?
A: The closing date for entries is February 29th. 2020

Q: How do I benefit from entering these awards?
A: The details of your publication will be published on this website. If your book is nominated a link will be included to your website (unless you request otherwise) so that those interested can find out more about its publisher. All submitting publishers (and authors of nominated books) receive an invitation to the Awards Evening in July, and publishers of nominated/winning books receive a certificate from Gorsedh Kernow. Winners are photographed individually and both winners and nominees are invited to have a group photograph taken with the Grand Bard of Gorsedh Kernow which is widely distributed with a press release soon after the Awards Presentation Evening. All photographs from the Awards Evening will be put into a gallery linked to this website and will be downloadable in high-resolution format.

Q: What happens to the books after judging?
A: Please see above (How many copies of my publication do you want?) If you need to reclaim your book(s) please state this on your entry form so that we can arrange for them to be available for collection from Redruth before the end of September 2019.

Q: What about late entries?
A: We will not accept late entries unless there are exceptional circumstances.  Please contact us if an entry is likely to be late.

Q: There is a new edition of my book – is it eligible for entry?
A: In the case of new editions we will only accept them if there has been a significant change to the publication.  (Such entries should be discussed with us before submission, or submitted with documentation outlining the changes). You may also submit the book if fhe first edition was published before 1995 and had therefore not had the opportunity of being entered for the Holyer an Gof Awards previously.

Q: The book has been published before but the latest reprint  is with a new publisher, is now in hardback/soft back, or has had only minor other changes - – is it eligible for entry?
A: No. Any new edition must show substantial changes (see above)

Q: How do I know if my book is eligible?
A: Please feel free to contact us in advance of submission to discuss whether your book fits the criteria. It should be a new or substantially revised publication about Cornwall, set in Cornwall or in Kernewek - the Cornish language.
